Admiral Viktor Chirkov, Russian Navy Commander-in-Chief, has finished an official visit to the United Kingdom at the invitation of Admiral Sir Mark Stanhope, First Sea Lord.
The visit began on Dec 9, since when the delegation has visited the very best that the United Kingdom and the Royal Navy can offer to their guests, including a visit to the Ministry of Defense for an official call on the First Sea Lord followed by introductory briefings on Royal Navy operations worldwide and a visit to the Fleet Headquarters in Northwood with Rear Admiral Ian Corder (Commander of Operations), and Rear Admiral Duncan Potts (Commander European Union Naval Force). These events were followed by a day at HM Naval Base Clyde, Faslane, where a tour of HMS Ambush, an Astute-class submarine, was one of the highlights of the Admiral's time in Scotland. The Russian Navy Commander-in-Chief also visited Rosyth Dockyard and familiarized himself with the new Queen Elizabeth-class aircraft carrier program.
On the days that followed, the delegation was heartily welcomed to Britannia Royal Naval College Dartmouth by Captain Jerry KYD, the Commanding Officer. Admiral Chirkov was hosted and briefed on Royal Navy training by Rear Admiral Clive Johnstone, Flag Officer Sea Training, including a visit by helicopter to HMS Richmond, a Type 23 frigate, to observe a 'Thursday War' at sea. Immediately afterward the Maritime Warfare School, HMS Collingwood, and its commanding officer, Commodore Mike Mansergh, greeted the delegation.
As a mark of the deep historical roots of the relationship between Great Britain and Russia, the First Sea Lord hosted his guests at an exceptional dinner in Admiral Nelson's Cabin aboard the Royal Navy Flagship, HMS Victory, which is retained in peerless condition in the dockyard at Portsmouth as a tribute to the heritage and history of the Royal Navy and her greatest Hero.
In his last day in the United Kingdom, Admiral Viktor Chirkov saw Naval Command Headquarters (NCHQ), located on Whale Island, visited Phoenix Damage Repair Instructional Unit, and enjoyed his tour of HMS Dauntless, Britain's newest and most capable Type 45 destroyer.
During the visit to the United Kingdom, Admiral Viktor Chirkov was accompanied by Mrs. Olga Chirkova.
